В штатах Коннектикут, Род-Айленд и Аляска это понятие используется лишь в названиях судебных органов власти. Округ - самая массовая единица местного самоуправления. Всего в США свыше 3 тысяч округов, от 3 в штате Делавэр до 254 в Техасе. Обычно границы округа совпадают с границами города, но чаще, за небольшим исключением (например г. Нью-Йорк), округ больше города. Наиболее густонаселенный округ - Лос-Анджелес [Los Angeles County] - свыше 8,8 млн. жителей; второй по количеству населения (около 5,1 млн. человек) - округ Кук (г. Чикаго) (1993). Штат самостоятельно определяет количество округов (в Коннектикуте и Род-Айленде их нет вообще). Административная власть обычно осуществляется выборным советом [county council] или комиссией [ county board, board of commissioners]. В округе избираются важнейшие местные власти: шериф [ sheriff], секретарь [clerk], коронер [ coroner], прокурор [ attorney], аудитор [ auditor], регистратор [ register of deeds], землемер [surveyor] и казначей [treasurer]. В функции властей округа входят вопросы правосудия и охраны порядка, строительства дорог, помощи неимущим, образования, медицины и др. -
